Talenom Oyj (HEL:TNOM) sheds €36m, company earnings and investor returns have been trending downwards for past three years
If you love investing in stocks you're bound to buy some losers. But the long term shareholders of Talenom Oyj (HEL:TNOM) have had an unfortunate run in the last three years. Unfortunately, they have held through a 58% decline in the share price in that time. And the ride hasn't got any smoother in recent times over the last year, with the price 53% lower in that time. Furthermore, it's down 39% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.
If the past week is anything to go by, investor sentiment for Talenom Oyj isn't positive, so let's see if there's a mismatch between fundamentals and the share price.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Talenom Oyj saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 2.3% per year, over the last three years. The share price decline of 25% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it's likely that the EPS decline has disappointed the market, leaving investors hesitant to buy.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Talenom Oyj the TSR over the last 3 years was -56%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
We regret to report that Talenom Oyj shareholders are down 52% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 8.9%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 8% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Talenom Oyj (1 can't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
