Is Now The Time To Put KONE Oyj (HEL:KNEBV) On Your Watchlist?

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like KONE Oyj (HEL:KNEBV). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

KONE Oyj's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. We can see that in the last three years KONE Oyj grew its EPS by 4.9% per year. That might not be particularly high growth, but it does show that per-share earnings are moving steadily in the right direction.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. KONE Oyj maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 3.7% to €10b. That's progress.

Are KONE Oyj Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a €37b company like KONE Oyj. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at €1.4b. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!

Is KONE Oyj Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One important encouraging feature of KONE Oyj is that it is growing profits. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. You should always think about risks though.
