What Singular People, S.A.'s (BME:SNG) 26% Share Price Gain Is Not Telling You

Singular People, S.A. (BME:SNG) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 26% share price jump in the last month. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 23% in the last twelve months.

After such a large jump in price, Singular People may be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 23.6x, since almost half of all companies in Spain have P/E ratios under 19x and even P/E's lower than 11x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

For instance, Singular People's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Singular People's Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Singular People would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the market.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 25%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 15% in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the market is expected to grow by 8.3% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term earnings decline into perspective.

With this information, we find it concerning that Singular People is trading at a P/E higher than the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

The Final Word

Singular People's P/E is getting right up there since its shares have risen strongly. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of Singular People revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given the market is set to grow. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as this earnings performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.

You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 1 warning sign for Singular People you should be aware of.
