Pharma Mar (BME:PHM) rises 8.0% this week, taking one-year gains to 106%

Unfortunately, investing is risky - companies can and do go bankrupt. But if you pick the right business to buy shares in, you can make more than you can lose. For example, the Pharma Mar, S.A. (BME:PHM) share price has soared 104% return in just a single year. It's also good to see the share price up 17% over the last quarter. But this could be related to the strong market, which is up 7.9% in the last three months. And shareholders have also done well over the long term, with an increase of 71% in the last three years.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last year Pharma Mar grew its earnings per share, moving from a loss to a profit.

When a company is just on the edge of profitability it can be well worth considering other metrics in order to more precisely gauge growth (and therefore understand share price movements).

We are skeptical of the suggestion that the 0.8% dividend yield would entice buyers to the stock. We think that the revenue growth of 19% could have some investors interested. Many businesses do go through a phase where they have to forgo some profits to drive business development, and sometimes its for the best.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Pharma Mar, it has a TSR of 106% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Pharma Mar shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 106% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 2% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Pharma Mar better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Pharma Mar has 2 warning signs (and 1 which can't be ignored) we think you should know about.
