Returns On Capital Signal Tricky Times Ahead For Össur hf (CPH:OSSR)
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. Although, when we looked at Össur hf (CPH:OSSR), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Össur hf is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.073 = US$83m ÷ (US$1.3b - US$197m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).
Thus, Össur hf has an ROCE of 7.3%. On its own, that's a low figure but it's around the 8.6% average generated by the Medical Equipment industry.

The Trend Of ROCE
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at Össur hf doesn't inspire confidence. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 7.3% from 12% five years ago. On the other hand, the company has been employing more capital without a corresponding improvement in sales in the last year, which could suggest these investments are longer term plays. It may take some time before the company starts to see any change in earnings from these investments.
What We Can Learn From Össur hf's ROCE
To conclude, we've found that Össur hf is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. And in the last five years, the stock has given away 18% so the market doesn't look too hopeful on these trends strengthening any time soon. On the whole, we aren't too inspired by the underlying trends and we think there may be better chances of finding a multi-bagger elsewhere.
