SUSS MicroTec SE's (ETR:SMHN) Shares Bounce 38% But Its Business Still Trails The Market
Those holding SUSS MicroTec SE (ETR:SMHN) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 38% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. But the last month did very little to improve the 51% share price decline over the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, SUSS MicroTec's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.6x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Germany, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 19x and even P/E's above 34x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, SUSS MicroTec has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is SUSS MicroTec's Growth Trending?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, SUSS MicroTec would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 98% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 368% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should bring diminished returns, with earnings decreasing 2.9% per year as estimated by the eight analysts watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 17% growth per year, that's a disappointing outcome.
With this information, we are not surprised that SUSS MicroTec is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
SUSS MicroTec's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of SUSS MicroTec's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking earnings is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
Having said that, be aware SUSS MicroTec is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 2 of those are potentially serious.
