When you buy shares in a company, there is always a risk that the price drops to zero. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. Take, for example Manz AG (ETR:M5Z). Its share price is already up an impressive 141% in the last twelve months. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 65% gain in the last three months. And shareholders have also done well over the long term, with an increase of 50% in the last three years.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Manz went from making a loss to reporting a profit, in the last year.

When a company has just transitioned to profitability, earnings per share growth is not always the best way to look at the share price action.

Unfortunately Manz's fell 15% over twelve months. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

It is of course excellent to see how Manz has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on how its financial position has changed over time.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Manz shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 141% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 9% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Manz better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that Manz is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant...
