The three-year shareholder returns and company earnings persist lower as Zalando (ETR:ZAL) stock falls a further 8.5% in past week
Zalando SE (ETR:ZAL) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 27% in the last month. But only the myopic could ignore the astounding decline over three years. Indeed, the share price is down a whopping 72% in the last three years. So it sure is nice to see a bit of an improvement. The thing to think about is whether the business has really turned around.
Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the three years that the share price fell, Zalando's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 29% each year. This fall in EPS isn't far from the rate of share price decline, which was 35% per year. So it seems that investor expectations of the company are staying pretty steady, despite the disappointment. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective
Zalando shareholders are down 34% for the year, but the market itself is up 7.7%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 6% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Zalando you should know about.
