Risks To Shareholder Returns Are Elevated At These Prices For Fielmann Group AG (ETR:FIE)
Fielmann Group AG's (ETR:FIE) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 26.8x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Germany, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 16x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Fielmann Group certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Keen to find out how analysts think Fielmann Group's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. Is There Enough Growth For Fielmann Group?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Fielmann Group's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 20% gain to the company's bottom line. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 1.0% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 17% each year as estimated by the seven analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 15% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's curious that Fielmann Group's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.
What We Can Learn From Fielmann Group's P/E?
Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Fielmann Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E as much as we would have predicted. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
