Lacklustre Performance Is Driving Nabaltec AG's (ETR:NTG) Low P/E
Nabaltec AG's (ETR:NTG) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 8.6x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Germany, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 17x and even P/E's above 30x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Nabaltec certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Nabaltec?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Nabaltec would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 14% gain to the company's bottom line. Although, the latest three year period in total hasn't been as good as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 6.2% over the next year. With the market predicted to deliver 19% growth , that's a disappointing outcome.
In light of this, it's understandable that Nabaltec's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Bottom Line On Nabaltec's P/E
We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Nabaltec maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
