For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like RATIONAL (ETR:RAA). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

RATIONAL's Improving Profits

Even when EPS earnings per share (EPS) growth is unexceptional, company value can be created if this rate is sustained each year. So it's no surprise that some investors are more inclined to invest in profitable businesses. RATIONAL's EPS shot up from €10.88 to €16.33; a result that's bound to keep shareholders happy. That's a fantastic gain of 50%.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. The good news is that RATIONAL is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 3.0 percentage points to 23%, over the last year. Both of which are great metrics to check off for potential growth.

Are RATIONAL Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a €7.3b company like RATIONAL. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth €1.2b. That equates to 16% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. So there is opportunity here to invest in a company whose management have tangible incentives to deliver.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Our quick analysis into CEO remuneration would seem to indicate they are. Our analysis has discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like RATIONAL with market caps between €3.6b and €11b is about €2.7m.

RATIONAL's CEO took home a total compensation package worth €2.2m in the year leading up to December 2022. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Is RATIONAL Worth Keeping An Eye On?

For growth investors, RATIONAL's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. If you need more convincing beyond that EPS growth rate, don't forget about the reasonable remuneration and the high insider ownership. Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to investing but it definitely makes RATIONAL look rather interesting indeed. Before you take the next step you should know about the 2 warning signs for RATIONAL (1 is a bit concerning!) that we have uncovered.
