A Closer Look At Kyland Technology's Earnings
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
Kyland Technology has an accrual ratio of 0.27 for the year to March 2024. Therefore, we know that it's free cashflow was significantly lower than its statutory profit, which is hardly a good thing. Over the last year it actually had negative free cash flow of CN¥261m, in contrast to the aforementioned profit of CN¥232.0m. Coming off the back of negative free cash flow last year, we imagine some shareholders might wonder if its cash burn of CN¥261m, this year, indicates high risk. Having said that, there is more to consider. We must also consider the impact of unusual items on statutory profit (and thus the accrual ratio), as well as note the ramifications of the company issuing new shares.

In order to understand the potential for per share returns, it is essential to consider how much a company is diluting shareholders. Kyland Technology expanded the number of shares on issue by 15% over the last year. That means its earnings are split among a greater number of shares. To talk about net income, without noticing earnings per share, is to be distracted by the big numbers while ignoring the smaller numbers that talk to per share value. You can see a chart of Kyland Technology's EPS by clicking here.
How Is Dilution Impacting Kyland Technology's Earnings Per Share (EPS)?
Kyland Technology was losing money three years ago. On the bright side, in the last twelve months it grew profit by 844%. But EPS was less impressive, up only 708% in that time. Therefore, the dilution is having a noteworthy influence on shareholder returns.
In the long term, earnings per share growth should beget share price growth. So Kyland Technology shareholders will want to see that EPS figure continue to increase. But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving. For that reason, you could say that EPS is more important that net income in the long run, assuming the goal is to assess whether a company's share price might grow.
How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
The fact that the company had unusual items boosting profit by CN¥67m, in the last year, probably goes some way to explain why its accrual ratio was so weak. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and it's very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. Kyland Technology had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to March 2024. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit a poor guide to underlying earnings power.
Our Take On Kyland Technology's Profit Performance
In conclusion, Kyland Technology's weak accrual ratio suggested its statutory earnings have been inflated by the unusual items. Meanwhile, the new shares issued mean that shareholders now own less of the company, unless they tipped in more cash themselves. On reflection, the above-mentioned factors give us the strong impression that Kyland Technology'sunderlying earnings power is not as good as it might seem, based on the statutory profit numbers. With this in mind, we wouldn't consider investing in a stock unless we had a thorough understanding of the risks.
