It's easy to match the overall market return by buying an index fund. Active investors aim to buy stocks that vastly outperform the market - but in the process, they risk under-performance. For example, the Newcapec Electronics Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300248) share price is down 41% in the last year. That contrasts poorly with the market decline of 12%. Even if you look out three years, the returns are still disappointing, with the share price down39% in that time. Furthermore, it's down 21% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

After losing 11% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Unfortunately Newcapec Electronics reported an EPS drop of 13% for the last year. The share price decline of 41% is actually more than the EPS drop. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, a year ago.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Newcapec Electronics shareholders are down 40% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 12%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 4% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Newcapec Electronics (of which 1 shouldn't be ignored!) you should know about.
