The past five-year earnings decline for Unilumin Group (SZSE:300232) likely explains shareholders long-term losses
It is a pleasure to report that the Unilumin Group Co., Ltd (SZSE:300232) is up 52% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been less than pleasing. You would have done a lot better buying an index fund, since the stock has dropped 24% in that half decade.
While the stock has risen 6.5% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Looking back five years, both Unilumin Group's share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 33% per year. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 5% compound annual share price fall. The relatively muted share price reaction might be because the market expects the business to turn around. With a P/E ratio of 106.21, it's fair to say the market sees a brighter future for the business.

A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Unilumin Group has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 20% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 4% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Unilumin Group , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
