The simplest way to benefit from a rising market is to buy an index fund. Active investors aim to buy stocks that vastly outperform the market - but in the process, they risk under-performance. Unfortunately the Unisplendour Corporation Limited (SZSE:000938) share price slid 30% over twelve months. That falls noticeably short of the market decline of around 16%. On the bright side, the stock is actually up 2.8% in the last three years.

After losing 3.9% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Unhappily, Unisplendour had to report a 6.4% decline in EPS over the last year. The share price decline of 30% is actually more than the EPS drop. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, a year ago.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Unisplendour shareholders are down 29% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 16%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 2% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
