Risks Still Elevated At These Prices As TPV Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000727) Shares Dive 28%
TPV Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000727) shares have retraced a considerable 28% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. The last month has meant the stock is now only up 9.1% during the last year.
Even after such a large drop in price, TPV Technology's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 42x might still make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in China, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 33x and even P/E's below 19x are quite common. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
It looks like earnings growth has deserted TPV Technology recently, which is not something to boast about. It might be that many are expecting an improvement to the uninspiring earnings performance over the coming period, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, TPV Technology would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any earnings per share growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Whilst it's an improvement, it wasn't enough to get the company out of the hole it was in, with earnings down 84% overall from three years ago. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 38% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term earnings results is a sobering picture.
With this information, we find it concerning that TPV Technology is trading at a P/E higher than the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
What We Can Learn From TPV Technology's P/E?
Despite the recent share price weakness, TPV Technology's P/E remains higher than most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of TPV Technology revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given the market is set to grow. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as this earnings performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
