Most people feel a little frustrated if a stock they own goes down in price. But in the short term the market is a voting machine, and the share price movements may not reflect the underlying business performance. So while the Glarun Technology Co.,Ltd (SHSE:600562) share price is down 17% in the last year, the total return to shareholders (which includes dividends) was -16%. And that total return actually beats the market decline of 17%. Longer term shareholders haven't suffered as badly, since the stock is down a comparatively less painful 8.3% in three years. Unfortunately the share price momentum is still quite negative, with prices down 8.2% in thirty days. We do note, however, that the broader market is down 4.9% in that period, and this may have weighed on the share price.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Even though the Glarun TechnologyLtd share price is down over the year, its EPS actually improved. It's quite possible that growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

It seems quite likely that the market was expecting higher growth from the stock. But looking to other metrics might better explain the share price change.

Given the yield is quite low, at 1.1%, we doubt the dividend can shed much light on the share price. Revenue was pretty flat on last year, which isn't too bad. However, it is certainly possible the market was expecting an uptick in revenue, and that the share price fall reflects that disappointment.

A Different Perspective

Glarun TechnologyLtd shareholders are down 16% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn't far from the market return of -17%. So last year was actually even worse than the last five years, which cost shareholders 2% per year. It will probably take a substantial improvement in the fundamental performance for the company to reverse this trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
