If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at Beijing Ultrapower Software (SZSE:300002) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Beijing Ultrapower Software is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.19 = CN¥1.2b ÷ (CN¥7.3b - CN¥918m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).

Thus, Beijing Ultrapower Software has an ROCE of 19%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the IT industry average of 3.8% it's much better.
