Genimous Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000676) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 26% after a shaky period beforehand. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 10% is also fairly reasonable.

Although its price has surged higher, Genimous Technology's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.9x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Software industry in China, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 4.9x and even P/S above 8x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Genimous Technology Has Been Performing

Genimous Technology has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think this respectable revenue growth might actually underperform the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Genimous Technology's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

Genimous Technology's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 29% gain to the company's top line. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year revenue frustratingly shrank by 63% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 26% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

In light of this, it's understandable that Genimous Technology's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.

The Key Takeaway

Genimous Technology's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

It's no surprise that Genimous Technology maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
