360 Security Technology (SHSE:601360) adds CN¥2.9b to market cap in the past 7 days, though investors from five years ago are still down 58%

While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the 360 Security Technology Inc. (SHSE:601360) share price has gained 16% in the last three months. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been disappointing. In that time the share price has delivered a rude shock to holders, who find themselves down 59% after a long stretch. So we're hesitant to put much weight behind the short term increase. However, in the best case scenario (far from fait accompli), this improved performance might be sustained.

While the last five years has been tough for 360 Security Technology shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

Check out our latest analysis for 360 Security Technology

Given that 360 Security Technology didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last five years 360 Security Technology saw its revenue shrink by 9.5% per year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. It seems appropriate, then, that the share price slid about 10% annually during that time. We don't generally like to own companies that lose money and don't grow revenues. You might be better off spending your money on a leisure activity. This looks like a really risky stock to buy, at a glance.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that 360 Security Technology has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 38% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 10% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand 360 Security Technology better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with 360 Security Technology (at least 1 which shouldn't be ignored) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
