Optimistic Investors Push PowerTECH Co., Ltd. (SZSE:301369) Shares Up 33% But Growth Is Lacking
PowerTECH Co., Ltd. (SZSE:301369) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 33% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 28% over that time.
Since its price has surged higher, PowerTECH's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 14x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to other companies in the Semiconductor industry in China, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios below 6.6x and even P/S below 3x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

How Has PowerTECH Performed Recently?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at PowerTECH over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, PowerTECH would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 38%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 23% overall rise in revenue. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 20,686% shows it's noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's alarming that PowerTECH's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Bottom Line On PowerTECH's P/S
Shares in PowerTECH have seen a strong upwards swing lately, which has really helped boost its P/S figure. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
Our examination of PowerTECH revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't detracting from the P/S as much as we though, given they look worse than current industry expectations. When we observe slower-than-industry revenue growth alongside a high P/S ratio, we assume there to be a significant risk of the share price decreasing, which would result in a lower P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these the share price as being reasonable.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for PowerTECH (1 is potentially serious!) that you need to be mindful of.
