It's nice to see the Hunan Kaimeite Gases Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002549) share price up 15% in a week. But that's not enough to compensate for the decline over the last twelve months. Like an arid lake in a warming world, shareholder value has evaporated, with the share price down 50% in that time. The share price recovery is not so impressive when you consider the fall. You could argue that the sell-off was too severe.

On a more encouraging note the company has added CN¥534m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the one-year loss for shareholders.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Hunan Kaimeite Gases fell to a loss making position during the year. While this may prove temporary, we'd consider it a negative, so it doesn't surprise us that the stock price is down. However, there may be an opportunity for investors if the company can recover.
