The board of FSPG Hi-Tech CO., Ltd. (SZSE:000973) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of CN¥0.067 on the 18th of June, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. Although the dividend is now higher, the yield is only 1.8%, which is below the industry average.

FSPG Hi-Tech's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. Based on the last payment, FSPG Hi-Tech was earning enough to cover the dividend, but free cash flows weren't positive. With the company not bringing in any cash, paying out to shareholders is bound to become difficult at some point.
Over the next year, EPS could expand by 13.9% if recent trends continue. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 27% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from CN¥0.05 total annually to CN¥0.067. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 3.0% per annum over that time. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. FSPG Hi-Tech has impressed us by growing EPS at 14% per year over the past five years. Growth in EPS bodes well for the dividend, as does the low payout ratio that the company is currently reporting.
Our Thoughts On FSPG Hi-Tech's Dividend
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think FSPG Hi-Tech will make a great income stock. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
