SINOTECH Company Limited's (SHSE:688737) Shares Leap 26% Yet They're Still Not Telling The Full Story
Despite an already strong run, SINOTECH Company Limited (SHSE:688737) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 26% in the last thirty days. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 31% in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, SINOTECH may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.7x, since almost half of all companies in the Chemicals industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 2.4x and even P/S higher than 5x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does SINOTECH's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Recent times have been advantageous for SINOTECH as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the share price, and thus the P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, SINOTECH would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 17% gain to the company's top line. As a result, it also grew revenue by 16% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 80% during the coming year according to the dual analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 25% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we find it odd that SINOTECH is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Despite SINOTECH's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
SINOTECH's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. The reason for this depressed P/S could potentially be found in the risks the market is pricing in. While the possibility of the share price plunging seems unlikely due to the high growth forecasted for the company, the market does appear to have some hesitation.
