Intco Recycling Resources (SHSE:688087) Will Be Hoping To Turn Its Returns On Capital Around
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. However, after investigating Intco Recycling Resources (SHSE:688087), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Intco Recycling Resources:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.089 = CN¥209m ÷ (CN¥4.5b - CN¥2.1b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
Thus, Intco Recycling Resources has an ROCE of 8.9%. In absolute terms, that's a low return, but it's much better than the Chemicals industry average of 5.5%.

The Trend Of ROCE
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at Intco Recycling Resources doesn't inspire confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 14% over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
While on the subject, we noticed that the ratio of current liabilities to total assets has risen to 47%, which has impacted the ROCE. Without this increase, it's likely that ROCE would be even lower than 8.9%. What this means is that in reality, a rather large portion of the business is being funded by the likes of the company's suppliers or short-term creditors, which can bring some risks of its own.
The Bottom Line
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for Intco Recycling Resources. Furthermore the stock has climbed 24% over the last year, it would appear that investors are upbeat about the future. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we would look further into this stock to make sure the other metrics justify the positive view.
