It's not possible to invest over long periods without making some bad investments. But you want to avoid the really big losses like the plague. So spare a thought for the long term shareholders of Shida Shinghwa Advanced Material Group Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603026); the share price is down a whopping 76% in the last three years. That would be a disturbing experience. The more recent news is of little comfort, with the share price down 39% in a year. More recently, the share price has dropped a further 9.7% in a month. We do note, however, that the broader market is down 4.5% in that period, and this may have weighed on the share price.

After losing 6.1% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

Given that Shida Shinghwa Advanced Material Group only made minimal earnings in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue to gauge its business development. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.

In the last three years, Shida Shinghwa Advanced Material Group saw its revenue grow by 0.2% per year, compound. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. Nonetheless, it's fair to say the rapidly declining share price (down 21%, compound, over three years) suggests the market is very disappointed with this level of growth. While we're definitely wary of the stock, after that kind of performance, it could be an over-reaction. Before considering a purchase, take a look at the losses the company is racking up.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 14% in the twelve months, Shida Shinghwa Advanced Material Group shareholders did even worse, losing 39% (even including dividends). However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 3%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
