The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. For example, the Tibet Huayu Mining Co., Ltd. (SHSE:601020) share price has soared 120% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. On top of that, the share price is up 23% in about a quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 25% in 90 days).

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During five years of share price growth, Tibet Huayu Mining actually saw its EPS drop 3.6% per year.

So it's hard to argue that the earnings per share are the best metric to judge the company, as it may not be optimized for profits at this point. Therefore, it's worth taking a look at other metrics to try to understand the share price movements.

We doubt the modest 0.2% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. The revenue reduction of 21% per year is not a positive. So it seems one might have to take closer look at earnings and revenue trends to see how they might influence the share price.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Tibet Huayu Mining has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 54% in the last twelve months. That's including the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 17% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
