Guilin Seamild Foods' (SZSE:002956) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
Guilin Seamild Foods Co., Ltd (SZSE:002956) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 9th of July to CN¥0.31. This takes the annual payment to 2.4% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.

Guilin Seamild Foods' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. Before making this announcement, Guilin Seamild Foods was earning enough to cover the dividend, but it wasn't generating any free cash flows. Since a dividend means the company is paying out cash to investors, this could prove to be a problem in the future.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 73.4%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 26% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Guilin Seamild Foods' Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
The track record isn't the longest, but we are already seeing a bit of instability in the payments. Since 2020, the annual payment back then was CN¥0.571, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CN¥0.31. Dividend payments have fallen sharply, down 46% over that time. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
Dividend Growth Is Doubtful
Given that dividend payments have been shrinking like a glacier in a warming world, we need to check if there are some bright spots on the horizon. It's not great to see that Guilin Seamild Foods' earnings per share has fallen at approximately 8.7% per year over the past five years. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this can turn into a longer term trend.
The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
