Panda Financial Holding Corp., Ltd.'s (SHSE:600599) 25% Dip Still Leaving Some Shareholders Feeling Restless Over Its P/SRatio

Published
SHSE:600599

To the annoyance of some shareholders, Panda Financial Holding Corp., Ltd. (SHSE:600599) shares are down a considerable 25% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 29% share price drop.

Even after such a large drop in price, given around half the companies in China's Consumer Finance industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 3.1x, you may still consider Panda Financial Holding as a stock to avoid entirely with its 5.5x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Has Panda Financial Holding Performed Recently?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Panda Financial Holding over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Panda Financial Holding's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Panda Financial Holding's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 20%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with revenue growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 34% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Panda Financial Holding's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

The Final Word

A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Panda Financial Holding's very lofty P/S. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

The fact that Panda Financial Holding currently trades on a higher P/S relative to the industry is an oddity, since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance isn't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.
