Not Many Are Piling Into Risuntek Inc. (SZSE:002981) Stock Yet As It Plummets 28%

Published
SZSE:002981

Risuntek Inc. (SZSE:002981) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 28% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Longer-term shareholders will rue the drop in the share price, since it's now virtually flat for the year after a promising few quarters.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, Risuntek's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 18.9x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in China, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 28x and even P/E's above 52x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Recent times have been quite advantageous for Risuntek as its earnings have been rising very briskly. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Risuntek's Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Risuntek's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 118% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 167% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 36% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is pretty similar based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Risuntek's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain recent growth rates.

What We Can Learn From Risuntek's P/E?

Risuntek's recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

Our examination of Risuntek revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look similar to current market expectations. When we see average earnings with market-like growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
