CGE Gas Natural (SNSE:CGEGAS) Has Compensated Shareholders With A Respectable 41% Return On Their Investment
The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the CGE Gas Natural S.A. (SNSE:CGEGAS) share price is up 20% in the last year, clearly besting the market decline of around 7.1% (not including dividends). That's a solid performance by our standards! Zooming out, the stock is actually down 11% in the last three years.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the last year, CGE Gas Natural actually saw its earnings per share drop 20%.
Given the share price gain, we doubt the market is measuring progress with EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
For starters, we suspect the share price has been buoyed by the dividend, which was increased during the year. Income-seeking investors probably helped bid up the stock price.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for CGE Gas Natural the TSR over the last year was 41%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that CGE Gas Natural rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 41% over the last year. That includes the value of the dividend. So this year's TSR was actually better than the three-year TSR (annualized) of 6%. The improving returns to shareholders suggests the stock is becoming more popular with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for CGE Gas Natural (of which 1 is significant!) you should know about.
