Take Care Before Jumping Onto Idorsia Ltd (VTX:IDIA) Even Though It's 25% Cheaper

Published
SWX:IDIA

The Idorsia Ltd (VTX:IDIA) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 25%. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 56% share price decline.

Since its price has dipped substantially, Idorsia's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.2x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Biotechs industry in Switzerland, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 5.1x and even P/S above 10x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does Idorsia's Recent Performance Look Like?

Idorsia could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Idorsia's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Idorsia would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. Despite the lack of growth, the company was still able to deliver immense revenue growth over the last three years. So while the company has done a great job in the past, it's somewhat concerning to see revenue growth decline so harshly.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 45% per annum during the coming three years according to the four analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 38% per annum growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Idorsia's P/S sits behind most of its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What Does Idorsia's P/S Mean For Investors?

Idorsia's P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Idorsia's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.
