DKSH Holding's (VTX:DKSH) Dividend Will Be Increased To CHF2.25
The board of DKSH Holding AG (VTX:DKSH) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of CHF2.25 on the 3rd of April, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the annual payment to 3.5% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

DKSH Holding's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. The last payment made up 80% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. In general, cash flows are more important than earnings, so we are comfortable that the dividend will be sustainable going forward, especially with so much cash left over for reinvestment.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 35.8%. Under the assumption that the dividend will continue along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 64% which would be quite comfortable going to take the dividend forward.
DKSH Holding Has A Solid Track Record
The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was CHF0.80, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CHF2.25. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 11% a year over that time. We can see that payments have shown some very nice upward momentum without faltering, which provides some reassurance that future payments will also be reliable.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. However, things aren't all that rosy. In the last five years, DKSH Holding's earnings per share has shrunk at approximately 6.5% per annum. If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth. Earnings are forecast to grow over the next 12 months and if that happens we could still be a little bit cautious until it becomes a pattern.
In Summary
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think DKSH Holding's payments are rock solid. The company has been bring in plenty of cash to cover the dividend, but we don't necessarily think that makes it a great dividend stock. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Without at least some growth in earnings per share over time, the dividend will eventually come under pressure either from competition or inflation. Businesses can change though, and we think it would make sense to see what analysts are forecasting for the company. Is DKSH Holding not quite the opportunity you were looking for?
