DKSH Holding (VTX:DKSH) Is Increasing Its Dividend To CHF2.25
DKSH Holding AG's (VTX:DKSH) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to CHF2.25 on 3rd of April. This will take the annual payment to 3.6% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

DKSH Holding's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. The last payment made up 80% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. Since the dividend is just paying out cash to shareholders, we care more about the cash payout ratio from which we can see plenty is being left over for reinvestment in the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 34.2% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along the course it has been charting recently, our estimates show the payout ratio being 65% which brings it into quite a comfortable range.
DKSH Holding Has A Solid Track Record
The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was CHF1.10, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CHF2.25. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 7.4% per annum over that time. The growth of the dividend has been pretty reliable, so we think this can offer investors some nice additional income in their portfolio.
Dividend Growth Is Doubtful
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. However, initial appearances might be deceiving. Over the past five years, it looks as though DKSH Holding's EPS has declined at around 6.5% a year. If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this can turn into a longer term trend.
In Summary
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think DKSH Holding's payments are rock solid. The company is generating plenty of cash, but we still think the dividend is a bit high for comfort. We don't think DKSH Holding is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Without at least some growth in earnings per share over time, the dividend will eventually come under pressure either from competition or inflation. Businesses can change though, and we think it would make sense to see what analysts are forecasting for the company. Is DKSH Holding not quite the opportunity you were looking for?
