Quebecor Inc.'s (TSE:QBR.A) Popularity With Investors Is Under Threat From Overpricing

There wouldn't be many who think Quebecor Inc.'s (TSE:QBR.A) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 11.6x is worth a mention when the median P/E in Canada is similar at about 13x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

Earnings have risen at a steady rate over the last year for Quebecor, which is generally not a bad outcome. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think this good earnings growth might only be parallel to the broader market in the near future. If not, then at least existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Some Growth For Quebecor?

Quebecor's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 7.5%. EPS has also lifted 27% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been respectable for the company.

Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 12% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.

In light of this, it's curious that Quebecor's P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

The Final Word

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Quebecor currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider market forecast. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
