Lumine Group Inc.'s (CVE:LMN) 28% Dip Still Leaving Some Shareholders Feeling Restless Over Its P/SRatio
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Lumine Group Inc. (CVE:LMN) shares are down a considerable 28% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 26% share price drop.
Even after such a large drop in price, Lumine Group may still be sending strong sell signals at present with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 7.2x, when you consider almost half of the companies in the Software industry in Canada have P/S ratios under 4.6x and even P/S lower than 1.8x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Lumine Group Performed Recently?
Recent times haven't been great for Lumine Group as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to recover significantly, which has kept the P/S ratio from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Lumine Group's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 18%. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 198% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 19% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 32% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
In light of this, it's alarming that Lumine Group's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
What We Can Learn From Lumine Group's P/S?
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Lumine Group's very lofty P/S. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
It comes as a surprise to see Lumine Group trade at such a high P/S given the revenue forecasts look less than stellar. The weakness in the company's revenue estimate doesn't bode well for the elevated P/S, which could take a fall if the revenue sentiment doesn't improve. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
