There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like FirstService's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 13% gain to the company's revenues. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 52% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 13% during the coming year according to the nine analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 7.4%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that FirstService's P/S sits behind most of its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From FirstService's P/S?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

To us, it seems FirstService currently trades on a significantly depressed P/S given its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the rest of its industry. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.
