Altus Group Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning
We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue. Based on the last payment, Altus Group's profits didn't cover the dividend, but the company was generating enough cash instead. Healthy cash flows are always a positive sign, especially when they quite easily cover the dividend.
Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 66.4% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could reach 132%, which probably can't continue without putting some pressure on the balance sheet.
Altus Group Has A Solid Track Record
Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. There hasn't been much of a change in the dividend over the last 10 years. While the consistency in the dividend payments is impressive, we think the relatively slow rate of growth is less attractive.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Unfortunately things aren't as good as they seem. It's not great to see that Altus Group's earnings per share has fallen at approximately 4.9% per year over the past five years. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.
Our Thoughts On Altus Group's Dividend
Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. The company has been bring in plenty of cash to cover the dividend, but we don't necessarily think that makes it a great dividend stock. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
