Planet 13 Holdings Inc. (CSE:PLTH) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 25% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Looking further back, the 11% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

Although its price has surged higher, it's still not a stretch to say that Planet 13 Holdings' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.9x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Pharmaceuticals industry in Canada, where the median P/S ratio is around 1.7x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has Planet 13 Holdings Performed Recently?

Planet 13 Holdings hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn around. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Planet 13 Holdings?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Planet 13 Holdings' is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 5.8%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 40% in total over the last three years. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 82% as estimated by the only analyst watching the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 4.6%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this information, we find it interesting that Planet 13 Holdings is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

What Does Planet 13 Holdings' P/S Mean For Investors?

Planet 13 Holdings appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Looking at Planet 13 Holdings' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't giving the boost to its P/S that we would've expected. There could be some risks that the market is pricing in, which is preventing the P/S ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
