CCL Industries VP & General Counsel Mark McClendon Sells 100% Of Holding

Published
TSX:CCL.B

We wouldn't blame CCL Industries Inc. (TSE:CCL.B) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Mark McClendon, the VP & General Counsel recently netted about CA$1.3m selling shares at an average price of CA$73.24. That diminished their holding by a very significant 100%, which arguably implies a strong desire to reallocate capital.

CCL Industries Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The President of Food & Beverage, Gunther Birkner, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for CA$2.8m worth of shares at a price of CA$70.00 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (CA$77.41). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. This single sale was just 39% of Gunther Birkner's stake.

Insider Ownership Of CCL Industries

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. CCL Industries insiders own about CA$125m worth of shares. That equates to 0.9% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
