Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Precision Drilling (TSE:PD). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is Precision Drilling Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years Precision Drilling's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Precision Drilling's EPS skyrocketed from CA$11.53 to CA$15.79, in just one year; a result that's bound to bring a smile to shareholders. That's a commendable gain of 37%.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. While Precision Drilling's EBIT margins are down, it's not all bad news as revenues are at least stable. Shareholders will be hopeful that the company can buck this trend.

Are Precision Drilling Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's pleasing to see company leaders with putting their money on the line, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. Shareholders will be pleased by the fact that insiders own Precision Drilling shares worth a considerable sum. As a matter of fact, their holding is valued at CA$45m. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. While their ownership only accounts for 3.3%, this is still a considerable amount at stake to encourage the business to maintain a strategy that will deliver value to shareholders.
