There wouldn't be many who think Precision Drilling Corporation's (TSE:PD) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x is worth a mention when the median P/S for the Energy Services industry in Canada is similar at about 0.5x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

What Does Precision Drilling's Recent Performance Look Like?

Precision Drilling's revenue growth of late has been pretty similar to most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to show no drastic signs of changing, justifying the P/S being at current levels. If this is the case, then at least existing shareholders won't be losing sleep over the current share price.

How Is Precision Drilling's Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Precision Drilling's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 20% gain to the company's top line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 107% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should demonstrate some strength in company's business, generating growth of 2.5% per annum as estimated by the twelve analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to contract by 6.9% per annum, which would indicate the company is doing better than the majority of its peers.

Despite the marginal growth, we find it odd that Precision Drilling is trading at a fairly similar P/S to the industry. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the contrarian forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Precision Drilling's P/S?

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Precision Drilling currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its growth forecasts are potentially beating a struggling industry. We assume that investors are attributing some risk to the company's future revenues, keeping it from trading at a higher P/S. One such risk is that the company may not live up to analysts' revenue trajectories in tough industry conditions. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the company's current prospects should normally provide a boost to the share price.
