Market Participants Recognise JSL S.A.'s (BVMF:JSLG3) Earnings Pushing Shares 26% Higher
JSL S.A. (BVMF:JSLG3) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 26% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 29% in the last twelve months.
Since its price has surged higher, given close to half the companies in Brazil have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 9x, you may consider JSL as a stock to avoid entirely with its 15.5x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
JSL could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like JSL's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 54%. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 55% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 82% each year over the next three years. With the market only predicted to deliver 17% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we can see why JSL is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On JSL's P/E
The strong share price surge has got JSL's P/E rushing to great heights as well. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of JSL's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with JSL (at least 1 which is concerning), and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
