Positivo Tecnologia S.A. (BVMF:POSI3) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 27% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 32% in the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Positivo Tecnologia may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 5.7x, since almost half of all companies in Brazil have P/E ratios greater than 11x and even P/E's higher than 19x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.

Positivo Tecnologia could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Positivo Tecnologia's Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Positivo Tecnologia would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 19% decrease to the company's bottom line. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 26% overall rise in EPS. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 38% over the next year. With the market only predicted to deliver 21%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

With this information, we find it odd that Positivo Tecnologia is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Final Word

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Positivo Tecnologia's P/E close to the market median. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

Our examination of Positivo Tecnologia's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
