ClearSale S.A. (BVMF:CLSA3) Surges 46% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement
The ClearSale S.A. (BVMF:CLSA3) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 46%. The bad news is that even after the stocks recovery in the last 30 days, shareholders are still underwater by about 8.0% over the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, ClearSale's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Software industry in Brazil, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 3x and even P/S above 7x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does ClearSale's Recent Performance Look Like?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, ClearSale's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like ClearSale's to be considered reasonable.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 1.1%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 46% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the lone analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 5.3% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 15% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
With this in consideration, its clear as to why ClearSale's P/S is falling short industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What Does ClearSale's P/S Mean For Investors?
Despite ClearSale's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that ClearSale maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with ClearSale, and understanding should be part of your investment process.
