Hypera S.A.'s (BVMF:HYPE3) Popularity With Investors Is Under Threat From Overpricing
It's not a stretch to say that Hypera S.A.'s (BVMF:HYPE3) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.9x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the market in Brazil, where the median P/E ratio is around 9x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.
Recent times haven't been advantageous for Hypera as its earnings have been rising slower than most other companies. It might be that many expect the uninspiring earnings performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/E from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Hypera would need to produce growth that's similar to the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. Still, the latest three year period was better as it's delivered a decent 23% overall rise in EPS. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 15% per year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 18% per year growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we find it interesting that Hypera is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What We Can Learn From Hypera's P/E?
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Hypera currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is lower than the wider market. When we see a weak earnings outlook with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
