Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. As with many other companies Biomm S.A. (BVMF:BIOM3) makes use of debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

What Is Biomm's Debt?
The chart below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Biomm had R$186.4m in debt in March 2021; about the same as the year before. However, it also had R$92.1m in cash, and so its net debt is R$94.4m.
How Healthy Is Biomm's Balance Sheet?
According to the last reported balance sheet, Biomm had liabilities of R$46.4m due within 12 months, and liabilities of R$202.4m due beyond 12 months. Offsetting this, it had R$92.1m in cash and R$22.3m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities total R$134.3m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
Since publicly traded Biomm shares are worth a total of R$874.2m, it seems unlikely that this level of liabilities would be a major threat. But there are sufficient liabilities that we would certainly recommend shareholders continue to monitor the balance sheet, going forward. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is Biomm's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.
Over 12 months, Biomm reported revenue of R$63m, which is a gain of 293%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. That's virtually the hole-in-one of revenue growth!
Caveat Emptor
Even though Biomm managed to grow its top line quite deftly, the cold hard truth is that it is losing money on the EBIT line. To be specific the EBIT loss came in at R$58m. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. However, it doesn't help that it burned through R$69m of cash over the last year. So in short it's a really risky stock. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. Be aware that Biomm is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant...
