The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. To wit, the Grupo Mateus S.A. (BVMF:GMAT3) share price is 80% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 6.1% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Grupo Mateus hasn't been listed for long, so it's still not clear if it is a long term winner.

While the stock has fallen 3.6% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Grupo Mateus was able to grow EPS by 37% in the last twelve months. The share price gain of 80% certainly outpaced the EPS growth. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.
