Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.

So, the natural question for argenx (EBR:ARGX) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

How Long Is argenx's Cash Runway?

A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. As at December 2022, argenx had cash of US$2.2b and no debt. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$967m. Therefore, from December 2022 it had 2.3 years of cash runway. Importantly, though, analysts think that argenx will reach cashflow breakeven before then. In that case, it may never reach the end of its cash runway. How Well Is argenx Growing?

Some investors might find it troubling that argenx is actually increasing its cash burn, which is up 33% in the last year. And we must say we find it concerning that operating revenue dropped 17% over the same period. Taken together, we think these growth metrics are a little worrying. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.

How Hard Would It Be For argenx To Raise More Cash For Growth?

While argenx seems to be in a fairly good position, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

argenx's cash burn of US$967m is about 4.6% of its US$21b market capitalisation. That's a low proportion, so we figure the company would be able to raise more cash to fund growth, with a little dilution, or even to simply borrow some money.

So, Should We Worry About argenx's Cash Burn?

It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way argenx is burning through its cash. For example, we think its cash burn relative to its market cap suggests that the company is on a good path. While its falling revenue wasn't great, the other factors mentioned in this article more than make up for weakness on that measure. Shareholders can take heart from the fact that analysts are forecasting it will reach breakeven. After taking into account the various metrics mentioned in this report, we're pretty comfortable with how the company is spending its cash, as it seems on track to meet its needs over the medium term. Taking an in-depth view of risks, we've identified 1 warning sign for argenx that you should be aware of before investing.
