What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. So when we looked at Viohalco (EBR:VIO) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Viohalco, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.07 = €184m ÷ (€4.2b - €1.6b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2021).
Thus, Viohalco has an ROCE of 7.0%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Metals and Mining industry average of 11%.

While the past is not representative of the future, it can be helpful to know how a company has performed historically, which is why we have this chart above. The Trend Of ROCE
Viohalco has not disappointed with their ROCE growth. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 138% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. So our take on this is that the business has increased efficiencies to generate these higher returns, all the while not needing to make any additional investments. On that front, things are looking good so it's worth exploring what management has said about growth plans going forward.
The Key Takeaway
In summary, we're delighted to see that Viohalco has been able to increase efficiencies and earn higher rates of return on the same amount of capital. Since the stock has returned a staggering 257% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. In light of that, we think it's worth looking further into this stock because if Viohalco can keep these trends up, it could have a bright future ahead.
